Awareness 360 team went to a brothel in Mymensingh, Bangladesh and successfully distributed #COVID19 relief bags among sex workers, an isolated and stigmatized community.

Each worker received a bag, including 15 kg rice, 1 kg lentil, 1 kg oil, 3 kg potatoes, 1 kg salt, 1.5 kg flour and a handwashing soap, which will be sufficient for 1 month. The 385 recipients have expressed their satisfaction and gratitude towards this effort. Our team noted a lack of social distancing practice amongst the sex workers, given they live in a confined place and are not very aware of its consequences. While distribution we have tried our best to maintain the safety measures as much as possible.

We also arranged protection gears like PPE for our team as we exposed ourselves to a risky environment. The sex workers recalled our previous Awareness 360 WASH project (Project MBBS-Make Brothels in Bangladesh Safe) with them and mentioned how the knowledge they gained (such as handwashing technique etc) three years ago has come handy during the ongoing pandemic crisis. We tried to convey the message regarding crucial safety measures to avoid COVID19 infection as we conducted the distribution.

Awareness 360 has strictly avoided printing any promotional materials (posters, banner etc) as we identified they will not be of any particular advantage to the beneficiaries, and also it lies in line with our support for green initiatives.

We will continue to receive donation so that we can support more people as the pandemic effect will remain for an unforeseeable future. We appreciate your continued support. You may donate via Bkash (personal): 01972581599.

This initiative would not have been possible without the collective effort of our generous donors, volunteers and supporters. A number of individuals, groups and organizations have tremendously supported us in various ways in terms of cash and in-kind donation, sharing our initiative among their networks both online and offline, providing us logistical support and advice, donating us PPE, driving our team to the location, managing supplies of goods and packaging and distributing, extending us mental support, connecting us to the right resource, and much, much more. We are extremely thankful to EACH ONE OF YOU. Many of you who donated anonymously, please know that we appreciate you. Some of you have even donated more than once, we can’t thank you enough! We would also like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to Global Changemakers, The Diana Award, UNDP, Youth Co:Lab Movers, The Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program, The American Center Dhaka, US State Alumni Bangladesh, Global Citizen, Her Will group- the thank-you list is endless! A major shoutout to Shoma Aunty and Astha Foundation for donating and contributing time and effort beyond what we can put in words. Her kindness and generosity know no bound! We thank her for motivating us to work harder. We are also thankful to Mymensingh DC office for the immense support during distribution. An executive magistrate (ADC) was present on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, along with police protection, to ensure a smooth distribution. We are also thankful to have had senior Govt. official Mr. Hasan Ahmmed Chowdhury supervise the distribution in person. Furthermore, we acknowledge the warm welcome and support by the committee members of the internal brothel association. If we have missed out on mentioning anyone, we apologize in advance.
